So what actually is Post Grunge?

A style of alternative rock that evolved from grunge in the mid-90's. Post-grunge employs the distorted guitar, vocal dynamics, and lyrical tone of traditional grunge music, albeit in a more radio-friendly manner.
Post-grunge can be plain hard rock or edgy alt-metal. A few post-grunge bands, like Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, and Godsmack cross over into Nu-metal.
Types of Post-Grunge:
Traditional Post-Grunge:
Bush
Candlebox
Creed
Foo Fighters
Matchbox Twenty
Silverchair
Nickleback

Heavy Post-Grunge:
Three Days Grace
Breaking Benjamin
Seehter
Chevelle
Staind
Trapt
Puddle of Mudd
Godsmack
Cold
3 Doors Down

Grunge
I remember way back in the early 90s in fact in 1990. the uprising of bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and in the underground post-punk, gothic, alternative club scene where everyone would get together and talk about these bands because we didn't have the internet back then. everyone I knew called them Alternative rock or Alternative metal. these bands were played in the club scene like a whole year before Nirvana came into the picture. once Nirvana came along with overnight success with Nevermind like so many other different elements in these bands there just had to be a name for this sub-genre. the term "Grunge" came out of Seattle Washington to categorize this new wave of bands coming out of the Seattle area.

here on the west coast states California, Arizona, New Mexico etc, everyone I knew just called these bands Alternative rock or metal. then just over time the term "Grunge" dominated this wave of bands. the same thing can be applied to the term "Screamo" in my opinion.

Pitch

When we performed the pitch for our band Tear Down we had to explain in detail who exactly they are. This meant a lot of detail was needed in order to explain who they actually were. My group may know the artist and genre of music very well but others may not know anything about it making extra detail vital. Unfortunately out presentation was not this best for simply not including enough information about our artist and genre. We will need to perform our pitch again in order for the rest of the class to fully understand the band and genre inside out. This means a lot more planning needs to go into it and a lot more thought with each slide.

We need to modify the presentation and add new things and things we have missed out. This includes things such as record labels, similar artists and more shots of locations. By doing this it will help the class to begin to understand who are band really are and what they are trying to do within the music industry. We will need to complete all of this in order to reshoot our pitch and get a better understanding from the class. Our feedback was not at all bad "as such" just general things they did not understand, meaning that we need to see to everyone of these points. The points were just simple question sand not criticisms about the band at all. This shows that the whole idea and function of the band is not bad, just the presentation of them.

What record label are Tear Down signed to?

Tear Downs record label:

Tear Down are sign to DGC  and Sub Pop record company. We have chosen these record labels since they have signed a lot of high end acts however, Sub Pop have gained the highest rating and success level with big bands such as Sound Garden and Nirvana, which happen to be bands that are very close and relative to the music which we are doing.

We have chosen these two record labels since they are the closest and most relevant but believe they would fit our artists since they have the Grunge and alternative feel to them, with minimal success but higher fame in more unconventional and less known artists.

Preliminary Shots

 Preliminary shots:

Within our music video the environment and story are key. We are going to have a narrative feel to our music video meaning we need the expected areas and meaning we need to make them interesting. To do this we have decided to shoot some of the video located in the woods since it is very dark and not much light will be shown within the scene.

Music Video Director-WoodKid

Woodkid

Yoann Lemoine is his real name and he has been around for many years, but also happens to be not only an artist I like but a video director and designer. He has had a vast career working his way up from directing other peoples music videos such as :
There are many stories as to how he became a musician after his direction days, but the one I know well is that he was asked to play a Banjo on a set he was filming and naturally began to sing, someone commented on his talent and from there he began his career. He has come from being hardly known to have two of his most sold songs; Iron and Run Boy Run feature on many TV commercial making his songs better known due to their catchy rhythm.

Band Profile

This is the rough idea as to what some of our band members will be wearing. We have decided to take the traditional look of grunge and add a modern feel. This will help adhere to the modern "grungers".

Different Genre

For a research task my group decided that creating this table to see what sub genres of each genre there are. This allows for an in-depth view into everything meaning that e can get a clear differential into what sub genre we are doing. We can clearly see the difference between all of the genres making it easy to see the difference between our genre and all of the others.

Costume elaboration

Costumes:

After a discussion with my teacher I have looked further into the idea of the grunge style.  For this I have looked at bands such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Sound Garden. These three bands were very big in the 90's grunge scene and that is why they are the prime bands to look at. I have discovered that many grunge bands wear a lot of dark and loose fitting clothing and many have checkered patterns on them such as this.

This means we will need to experiment with our bands clothing a bit more but our final piece should look a little like one of the original bands but with a modern twist. To do this we will need to take elements from all of the old bands and their clothing and appearance and incorporate this into our band to get a finished piece, which looks similar to this.

Possible ideas for the Bands appearance

Bands appearance:

Here I am going to talk about the possible ideas of the bands appearance. We want the band to look from the genre of grunge but at the same time we want them to look normal to show there is really no difference between people who like this the of music compared to someone who likes R&B, showing that the only reason why they are different is because they are not understood and are treated as outcasts so that is what they will become.

Things that the band members should have:

  1. Possible piercings.
  2. Some tattoos (not too extreme).
  3. Love of the music genre (e.g. tops and other things promoting their band or other bands).
  4. Some sense of grunge dress sense (maybe coat or shoes).
  5. every one has been through pain and everyone of them has been or is still not understood.
  6. Dark hair and longer than normal if possible.

This is what grunge used to loo like for the band Seether:

Notice the long hair and unusually dark clothing and especial the unique hair styles which each of them have. They all want to express themselves in different ways in order to give themselves their own identity. However since then the band has moved forward with the times and has adapted new styles with this. They have attempted to get their selves out of the depressive feel of music and now have a more upbeat turn to their music.

They now appear at concerts looking like this:
They have changed with the times and now look more acceptable within society and this is because they are fed up with setting a negative stereotype for the genre of grudge. Many of the band member have been though troubles but have seen the brighter side of life and now produce music not for people who want to be depressed but for people who wan a change in their life. With their change of appearance their style of music and meaning has also changed.

This is what we want our band to follow, setting new trends instead of adhering to old ones. The photo of Seether above is what we are going to base our appearance of our band members on. This is because we have a similar meaning in our music as they do making them ideal for what we want to do.

Music Video analysis (Same genre) Staind-Outside

The genre is post grunge which i the genre which me and my group are studying making it the prime type of video for me to analyse.

The reason i have chosen this video is because when watching the video it has a lot of meaning behind it and is a very unusual story but the video has been thought about long and hard and has a unusual concept.

I am analysing this video with goodwins theories in order to get a true representation of the video.

Within this video the representation of the genre of post grunge is very prominent. This is due to a multiple of things from the lighting within the scene to the colours of the outfits and the lyrics in the song. The lighting within the music video is very dark and many of the colours are dark or even black. At (1:10) the background to the lead singer is dark and shady. The lead singer has half of his face presented to the light and the other half in the dark and the same is happening in the background showing the possible connotation from the dark to the light and giving the possible representation of the different sides to his, the bands and the audience.

At (1:19) the teenager who is attempting to watch the band is peering through a hole in the wall, which is blocking him from the band and the audience. This applies to Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism since he is watching them where they cannot see him but he is "spying" upon them. This could connote that the teenager is alone and in need of someone or something to associate with and the band could be the gap that divides he teenager with society. He is misunderstood and needs someone to understand him. The lyrics "I’m on the outside, I’m looking in" connotes the fact that he is looking upon them wanted to get inside or using the term tearing the walls down since they are the only thing which is holding him back from the concert or "reality".
Throughout the video the teenager attempts to gain entry into the concert trig a multiple of ways. He first begins to attempt to dig his way in but then results in attempting to build his way in. The wall could symbolise the divide between him and everyone else and how no one seems to understand him or be on his "side”. He is trying to break free from this view and is trying to become a normal teenager where he can associate with others and do normal things a teenager would. He eventually makes it over the wall only to find the other side to be exactly the same connoting that even though he made it over that wall or that separate he will still be the same inside which changes nothing.

Within the video the colours are portrayed as very dark and with a very low contrast making them very dark and give the sense of grunge. It has a mixture of low key and high key lighting highlighting the good points and the bad. The colours give the sense, feel, and atmosphere of the post grunge genre making this video much like the one we hoe to make and we will carry a lot of the characteristics of this video onto our own video in order to give it a traditional post grunge feel.

The video is narrative based but widely surrounds the band at the same time. The story plot has been mentioned but largely focuses on the band since the lead singers appearance is a very large part of what the band is. Every band has their selling point and Staind’s selling point happens to be their relatable lyrics and story and the appearance of the lead singer, setting and band.
