The genre is post grunge which i the genre which me and my group are studying making it the prime type of video for me to analyse.
The reason i have chosen this video is because when watching the video it has a lot of meaning behind it and is a very unusual story but the video has been thought about long and hard and has a unusual concept.
I am analysing this video with goodwins theories in order to get a true representation of the video.
Within this video the
representation of the genre of post grunge is very prominent. This is due to a
multiple of things from the lighting within the scene to the colours of the
outfits and the lyrics in the song. The lighting within the music video is very
dark and many of the colours are dark or even black. At (1:10) the background
to the lead singer is dark and shady. The lead singer has half of his face
presented to the light and the other half in the dark and the same is happening
in the background showing the possible connotation from the dark to the light
and giving the possible representation of the different sides to his, the bands
and the audience.
At (1:19) the teenager who
is attempting to watch the band is peering through a hole in the wall, which is
blocking him from the band and the audience. This applies to Goodwin’s theory
of voyeurism since he is watching them where they cannot see him but he is
"spying" upon them. This could connote that the teenager is alone and
in need of someone or something to associate with and the band could be the gap
that divides he teenager with society. He is misunderstood and needs someone to
understand him. The lyrics "I’m on the outside, I’m looking in"
connotes the fact that he is looking upon them wanted to get inside or using
the term tearing the walls down since they are the only thing which is holding
him back from the concert or "reality".
Throughout the video the
teenager attempts to gain entry into the concert trig a multiple of ways. He
first begins to attempt to dig his way in but then results in attempting to
build his way in. The wall could symbolise the divide between him and everyone
else and how no one seems to understand him or be on his "side”. He is
trying to break free from this view and is trying to become a normal teenager
where he can associate with others and do normal things a teenager would. He
eventually makes it over the wall only to find the other side to be exactly the
same connoting that even though he made it over that wall or that separate he
will still be the same inside which changes nothing.
Within the video the
colours are portrayed as very dark and with a very low contrast making them
very dark and give the sense of grunge. It has a mixture of low key and high
key lighting highlighting the good points and the bad. The colours give the sense,
feel, and atmosphere of the post grunge genre making this video much like the
one we hoe to make and we will carry a lot of the characteristics of this video
onto our own video in order to give it a traditional post grunge feel.
The video is narrative
based but widely surrounds the band at the same time. The story plot has been
mentioned but largely focuses on the band since the lead singers appearance is
a very large part of what the band is. Every band has their selling point and
Staind’s selling point happens to be their relatable lyrics and story and the
appearance of the lead singer, setting and band.
